After a successful launch last year, the Round Table on boat construction and materials will be making a welcome return to the 2018 edition of the METSTRADE Show.

The event, which takes place on 13-14 November, will focus on the most relevant topics related to new materials and construction techniques for all types of boats and yachts. This edition will highlight rapid manufacturing and 3D printing, featuring an impressive line-up of participants from a wide range of countries and disciplines.

The Round Table will represent an opportunity for technicians and yacht designers to exchange knowledge and ideas, while also giving the public a chance to interact with the speakers and gain a better understanding of the latest technical topics.

The presentations will be organised in two sessions, the first from 13:30 to 16:00 on 13 November and the second from 10:30 to 13:00 on 14 November. They will host participants from a wide range of countries and disciplines discussing their latest work.

The 2018 edition of the Round Table will focus on materials and methodologies for product development in the boatbuilding industry. The first day will see structural engineers such as Luca Olivari (OlivariEng) and Valerio Corniani (DIAB), yacht designers including Jeroen Wats (G-Force Yachts) and representatives of composites manufacturers such as Blacks Composites and Bercella discuss their latest findings and applications.

The main topic on the second day will be the use of rapid prototyping and 3D printing to reduce time and costs compared with equivalent production via traditional technology. This technology is expected to make the marine industry substantially more performing and competitive. Moi Composites will present a proprietary technology capable of 3D printing high-performance thermosetting composite parts while combining robotics intelligence with digital fabrication. In addition, Massimo Musio Sale will talk about additive manufacturing as a boat building method of the future.

The roundtable sessions will be organised in cooperation with Simonetta Pegorari, renowned communications & marketing specialist in composite materials.

The Round Table on Boat Construction & Materials is an initiative organised by the Construction Material Pavilion (CMP), which has been a major specialist platform for raw materials and composites within the leisure marine industry since 2013. Some 54 major exhibitors have already confirmed their participation in the pavilion for 2018.

Editor's comment: Weather with you

My work office feels unusually cold. As I type this, the BBC weather says it’s 10˚C outside. Hmm, is that typical for the end of April? Anyway, our landlord has deemed that with Spring now in the air, it’s time to turn off the heating and save money. This presents a challenge typing when I can’t feel my fingers.
